Almost Ready To Start

I won’t really be starting work till next week, but I started moving into my research office tonight. The Roundel is the research base for Divinity Postgrads (St Mary’s is the Divinity school within the University of St Andrews). The building dates from the 1500’s, and is named for the tower that juts out onto South Street. This is the door to the tower, which sadly, is not the door we use to get in, but I get to walk by it every day, so that’s nice. I’ll take some daylight pictures soon. If it wasn’t night, you’d see the cathedral ruins right behind it.

Though the building is 16th century, the interior feels a lot more like the West Wing of the White House. Maybe it’s the carpet, or the lighting, or the white wood panelling, but I already feel like I might run into CJ or Josh in the halls.

The Roundel serves about 50 postgrads, all of us in one of the three Divinity programs: 1) Institute for Bible, Theology & Hermeneutics 2) Center for the Study of Religion & Politics 3) Institute for Theology, Imagination & the Arts (me!). There’s about 8 different offices serving 4-10 people each. I’m in The Melville Room.

Named for this guy.

This is the emptiest my shelves will ever be.

My window looks right out over the garden and also looks toward Deans Court (it’s next door). I’m glad to be by a window, by the heater, and facing the wall instead of another person.

I share the office with four men, whom I’ve only briefly sort of met. All three programs are represented in our room.

I’m having to get used to seeing awesome old fireplaces being stuffed into the corners of re-apropriated rooms. I should be used to it from Bennington, but it still fills me with pathos and longing.

And here’s two extra pictures I took this afternoon walking home from the grocery store.

This weekend I’m hoping to soak up the last carefree minutes of my life for the next 3 or so years. Shit gets real next week. 🙂

Every picture you share makes me feel just a little closer to you, which in turn warms my heart.
