8 Tiny Movie Reviews

A friend just emailed me asking what I’d been watching recently that I might recomend to her. Fortunatley I have a word doc of every movie I’ve watched this year so far, so it was easy to think back on some recent favorites. I ended up writing little descriptions, so I figured I’d go ahead, cut and paste my response here, and recomend these to you too dear blog reader, whomever you are. Happy film-viewings.

Recent finds/old faves I’ve been revisiting:

Sweet Land -small indie film about farmers- made a couple of years ago. It’s very quiet, truthful and tender. If you watch it, don’t read the back cover- it gives away too much of the very simple story.

Nick & Norah’s infinite playlist- this teen movie charmed the pants off me. It’s definitely not perfect- but i was saying ” oh my gosh” through the whole thing it was so precious

All the Real Girls- small indie film- kinda funny kinda surprisingly intense- but a visceral experience movie about relationships. Paul Schneider and Zooey Deschanel are amazing together.

Autism: The Musical - amazing documentary about a musical theater program for autistic kids. I was literally leaning into the screen and holding my breath almost the whole time- i was gripped- lifted up- broken- undone- so beautiful and full of love

2 days in Paris- Julie Delpy’s directorial debut- it’s funny, confusing, raw and real- brilliantly written and acted and full of awkward reality

Girl’s Rock- great documentary about rock n’ roll camp for girls in Portland

Paper Heart- loved this pseudo documentary/fictional reality film.

The Visitor- amazingly simple story about being a neighbor- love this film maker- he also did “the station agent” his stories always deal with loneliness in a beautifully redemptive way

I was hoping at least one of these would be available to stream on Netflix. Sure enough there is. I’m just sitting down to watch The Visitor. Thanks, Kj!
